The U.S. Ambassador to Botswana Howard Van Vranken has hosted members of Madibela Tlhopho to discuss their role in Botswana’s landmark political transition. The meeting, described as engaging and insightful, revolved around the organization’s pivotal contribution to ending the Botswana Democratic Party’s (BDP) decades-long dominance since independence in 1966.

“We had a meeting this morning with the USA Ambassador Howard Van Vranken. He invited us to share a story on and about Madibela Tlhopho. A story he finds fascinating and inspiring in nurturing democracy,”  Madibelatlhopho which is an affiliate of the UDC said.

Ambassador Van Vranken expressed a keen interest in learning about the grassroots movement, which he deemed a “fascinating and inspiring example of nurturing democracy.” The story of Madibela Tlhopho, a collective often described as a champion of democratic ideals, highlights how citizen-driven action can influence governance and accountability in a maturing democracy.

During the meeting, representatives from Madibela Tlhopho detailed their journey of advocating for transparency, fairness, and accountability in Botswana’s political and institutional framework. They highlighted their role in dismantling what they referred to as “evil institutions” that had perpetuated undemocratic practices.

The Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services (DISS) and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) came under scrutiny for alleged biases that bolstered the ruling BDP’s grip on power. By mobilizing citizens, raising awareness, and championing reforms, Madibela Tlhopho contributed to shifting public opinion and galvanizing opposition forces.

“A story of how we contributed in a small way in ending a one party state since independence. How we decimated evil institutions being the DISS, IEC and the BDP,” the organisation said.
