The crossover jazz band WDP continues to redefine the local music landscape with their groundbreaking rearrangements of contemporary songs, blending jazz with elements of Botswana’s diverse musical heritage. Through their dynamic performances and experiential bespoke concerts, WDP is carving a unique space in the industry, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity.

Their debut album, The Bechuanaland Sessions: Phase 1, is a testament to their innovative approach. Available on all streaming platforms, the album features captivating renditions of local classics such as “Robete” (originally by Sereetsi & The Natives), “Transition” (by Samantha Mogwe ft Zeus), and “Sala Le Nna” (by the late Dramaboi ft Katlego Ramphaleng). Their live performances extend even further, incorporating both old-school and new-school hits, including HT Tautona’s “Gotta Go,” Scar’s “My People,” and KX Legit’s “Jikeleza.”

WDP is powered by an ensemble of some of Botswana’s finest musicians: Thero Seleka on guitar, Michael Mokgatitswane on bass, Tebogo Gaetsewe on vocals, Benjamin Msemburi on saxophone, Maleho Makgothi on sound engineering, and Leroy Nyoni on drums, the visionary founder. The band’s ability to fuse different musical styles while maintaining a distinct jazz identity has won them a growing fan base across the region.

From Corporate Stages to Sold-Out Public Shows

WDP’s versatility is evident in their ability to cater to both corporate and public audiences. They have performed for esteemed organizations such as Lucara, First Capital Bank Botswana, CEDA, BURS, and BIFM. Their public performances include two sold-out concerts at BotswanaCraft and their signature Crib Shindigs—intimate backyard sessions that provide fans with an up-close experience of their artistry.

All Things Musical: Elevating Botswana’s Creative Industry

As the flagship artist group of All Things Musical, an audio and entertainment agency specializing in event curation and holistic audio solutions, WDP embodies the company’s commitment to artistic excellence. The agency, led by Executive and Artistic Director Leroy Nyoni, has successfully executed over 40 live music events since 2016, playing a pivotal role in the country’s evolving creative sector.

The Need for More Private Partnerships in the Creative Industry

The creative industry plays a crucial role in economic development, yet its potential remains largely untapped due to inadequate funding and structural support. Private sector partnerships are essential in bridging these gaps, fostering growth, and enhancing the industry’s contribution to GDP.

Investment from private entities can have a significant ripple effect across the creative value chain. From music production and live performance to digital distribution and talent management, financial backing from corporations and private investors can help creatives professionalize their work, scale their businesses, and reach wider markets.

    Economic and Social Impact

A thriving creative sector contributes to job creation, tourism, and national branding. Countries that have successfully integrated private partnerships into their creative economies—such as South Africa and Nigeria—have seen substantial GDP growth driven by music, film, fashion, and visual arts. Botswana has the potential to follow suit, but it requires a collaborative effort between government bodies, private investors, and industry stakeholders.

    Incentivizing Private Investment

To attract more private investment, policymakers must implement tax incentives, grants, and funding programs that encourage businesses to support local talent. Moreover, corporations must recognize the immense value in associating with cultural projects, as it enhances brand positioning and corporate social responsibility efforts. By fostering a symbiotic relationship between the private sector and creatives, Botswana can unlock the full potential of its artistic economy, ensuring sustainability and global competitiveness.

WDP will be captivating audiences at Molapo Theatre with a sold-out performance on Saturday the 8th of February, delivering an intimate night of live local music. Due to overwhelming demand, an additional Friday night was added to accommodate more music enthusiasts, solidifying WDP’s reputation as one of Botswana’s most sought-after live acts. Fans will be treated to their signature blend of jazz-infused interpretations of local favorites, further establishing the band’s growing influence in the regional music scene.
