Salakae Resigns: What Does It Mean?

Hon. Noah Salakae’s resignation reflects the standard of accountability this Administration has set for itself from the outset: that no office, however senior, is above the law, and that where allegations of wrongdoing arise, due process must be allowed to run its full and independent course. President Boko’s acceptance of the resignation is a clear demonstration that the Government’s commitment to good governance, transparency and accountability is not merely stated policy, but a standard actively upheld in practice, without exception and regardless of political standing.

Minister Salakae’s decision to step aside voluntarily, in deference to the judicial process, reflects respect for the institutions of the State and for the presumption of innocence that must be afforded to every citizen before the courts. By choosing this path, he has placed the integrity of Government and the sanctity of Botswana’s justice system above personal or political considerations, conduct that deserves to be acknowledged as honourable. He will now have the opportunity, like any other citizen, to answer the charges before him fully and fairly in a court of law, and the Government will not prejudge that process.

This development, while regrettable, demonstrates that Botswana’s institutions of accountability are functioning as intended. The resignation was not compelled by public pressure but reflects a shared understanding, at the highest levels of Government, that public office is a position of trust that must never be allowed to shield anyone from scrutiny.
