Botswana is experiencing significant changes in family formation patterns, with marriages falling to their lowest level in a decade while births outside marriage continue to dominate, according to the latest Vital Statistics Report 2024 released by Statistics Botswana. The report shows that only 4,517 marriages were registered in 2024, the lowest figure recorded in the past ten years and a 41 percent decline from the peak recorded in 2021. The country’s crude marriage rate fell to 1.8 marriages per 1,000 population, reflecting a continued downward trend in formal unions.

While the report does not provide divorce statistics, demographic trends suggest a changing landscape in relationships and family structures. Statistics Botswana notes that marriage is occurring later in life, with the average age at first marriage estimated at 43 years for men and 38 years for women. At the same time, births outside marriage remain the norm. Of the 41,784 live births recorded in 2024, about 84 percent were to mothers who were not married, while only 16 percent were to married mothers.

According to Statistics Botswana, the trend may be linked to changing social norms, delayed marriage, increased cohabitation and economic factors influencing family formation. The agency says these developments have important implications for social protection systems, child welfare programmes and family support policies.

The report highlights a long-term decline in births to married mothers and a corresponding rise in out-of-wedlock births. Most non-marital births were recorded among women aged between 20 and 34 years.

According to Statistics Botswana, the trend may be linked to changing social norms, delayed marriage, increased cohabitation and economic factors influencing family formation. The agency says these developments have important implications for social protection systems, child welfare programmes and family support policies.

The findings form part of the 2024 Vital Statistics Report, which analysed births, marriages and deaths registered through the Department of Civil and National Registration. Overall, the report concludes that Botswana is witnessing persistently low fertility, declining marriage rates and evolving family structures that will require continued monitoring by policymakers and social planners.
