African luxury fashion brand Koki Kamala has unveiled A Message You Can Feel, a collection of premium leather handbags featuring raised, readable Braille, challenging conventional ideas of luxury through tactile design and inclusion.
The collection emerged from a question posed to founder and designer Koki Chiepe by her friend, Thami Dish: “Have you ever thought of designing a Braille bag?”
What followed was an almost two-year journey of learning, experimentation and engagement with Braille readers to ensure the tactile messages were functional rather than decorative.
Chiepe studied how Braille is read through touch, developing prototypes and seeking feedback from members of the blind and visually impaired community. Their input informed adjustments to spacing, positioning and other design details, placing accessibility at the centre of the creative process.

Conversations at Kibarani School for the Blind in Kilifi, Kenya, reinforced the collection’s wider significance.
Cyprian, a visually impaired teacher at the school, welcomed the initiative as a meaningful acknowledgement of a community that often feels overlooked. He said the project could help improve public understanding of blind people and their place in society.
Dennis Tumaini, the school’s student president, expressed excitement about handbags carrying messages that blind people could discover through touch. He also highlighted the potential to introduce Braille to people unfamiliar with the tactile communication system.
Messages including LOVE, LOVE COMES IN ALL SHADES, BEAUTIFULLY EVOLVING and EVER ONWARD appear across the collection, combining tactile communication with the brand’s emphasis on leather craftsmanship, colour and storytelling.
“A beautiful object shouldn’t stop communicating simply because someone experiences the world differently,” Chiepe said.
“For almost two years, I have been learning. I have made mistakes. I have gone back, changed spacing, changed positioning and asked people who actually read Braille to tell me when something wasn’t right.”

She said the project had evolved beyond handbag design into an exercise in listening and respecting Braille as a language.
“I want someone to run their fingers across one of these bags and discover a message waiting for them. That, to me, is beautiful. That is luxury.”
Through A Message You Can Feel, Koki Kamala hopes to encourage broader conversations about accessibility, representation and inclusive design in fashion.
The brand is inviting collaboration with blindness organisations, Braille educators, retailers, cultural institutions and corporate partners, while exploring initiatives supporting Braille education, access to resources and organisations serving blind and visually impaired communities.Founded by Chiepe, Koki Kamala is an African luxury fashion and accessories brand inspired by African landscapes, heritage, storytelling and craftsmanship.
The collection marks the beginning of a wider journey to make luxury more inclusive, meaningful and accessible.
