More than 600 young footballers from across Southern Africa are expected to take part in the Dinaledi International Football Tournament in Oodi from July 18 to 20. The tournament, now in its second year, will bring together more than 30 teams from Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Players from Under-9 to Under-17 level will compete over three days at Dinaledi Football Academy. Organisers say the competition aims to raise youth football standards, strengthen regional competition and provide opportunities for young players to be identified by coaches and scouts.
Absa Bank Botswana has reaffirmed its support for the tournament through a partnership with the event.
Speaking about the initiative, Absa Bank Botswana Public and Media Relations Manager Spencer Moreri said youth development remains central to the bank’s purpose.
“Every talented child should have the opportunity to compete at a high level, be seen by scouts and coaches, and believe that football can open doors.”
“At Absa, we believe that young people thrive when they are given opportunities to develop their talent, build confidence and pursue their ambitions,” Moreri said.
“The Dinaledi International Football Tournament is more than a football competition. It is a platform that nurtures future leaders, promotes discipline and opens doors for young athletes to compete beyond our borders. “The bank said its involvement also supports talent identification efforts by providing international exposure for players identified through the 2025 regional scouting initiative while creating opportunities to discover emerging talent. Dinaledi Football Academy Football Operations Manager Hassan Stoffel said the tournament was established to create opportunities for young players.
“The Dinaledi International Football Tournament was created to give young players the platform they deserve,” Stoffel said.
“Every talented child should have the opportunity to compete at a high level, be seen by scouts and coaches, and believe that football can open doors.”
According to organisers, the tournament is expected to feature more than 40 matches over the three-day period.
