The  Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has accused  President Duma Boko of  pushing for the establishment of a Constitutional Court (ConCourt) driven by what the former ruling party calls a “dangerous agenda” that undermines public safety and Botswana’s social values. In the strongly worded statement, the BDP claims on its facebook page that Boko wants the ConCourt to abolish the death penalty without public consultation, arguing that such a move would prioritise “the right to life of the murderer and not the victim.”

According to the BDP post, Boko would also “appoint his lawyer friends as judges of the ConCourt” to ensure the court delivers rulings aligned with what the party characterises as his “personal agenda.”

The party further alleges that Boko intends to use the proposed court to legalise same-sex marriage, transgender operations and other practices which it says “go against the wishes of Batswana.” According to the BDP post, Boko would also “appoint his lawyer friends as judges of the ConCourt” to ensure the court delivers rulings aligned with what the party characterises as his “personal agenda.”

The statement concludes with a rallying call to the public: “Say No to injustice! VOTE BDP.”Boko has previously argued that establishing a Constitutional Court would strengthen constitutionalism and human rights protections in Botswana, a position sharply rejected in the latest BDP communication.
