Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) has increased its available international connectivity capacity from 300Gbps (gigabits per second) to 1 Tbps (terabites per second), in a move aimed at strengthening the resilience and reliability of Botswana’s digital infrastructure.
The state-owned telecommunications infrastructure provider revealed this week that it has signed a long-term international capacity lease with a strategic partner in South Africa, with the additional capacity routed through the Ramatlabama and Pioneer Gate border crossings. The upgrade is expected to strengthen network redundancy and support more reliable connectivity as demand for digital services and international bandwidth continues to grow. BoFiNet said the investment is intended to ensure that its quality of service remains aligned with international standards while providing greater resilience against potential disruptions to international connectivity.
As Botswana’s national telecommunications backbone provider, BoFiNet plays a central role in connecting businesses, institutions and consumers to local and international digital networks.
Commenting on the development, BoFiNet Chief Executive Officer Dr Geoffrey Seleka said the investment was part of the organisation’s longer-term strategy to prepare Botswana for an increasingly digital economy.
BoFiNet said the increased capacity would also help position Botswana to participate more effectively in the global digital economy, as businesses and public services become increasingly dependent on reliable connectivity.

The move to 1Tbps represents a significant expansion of BoFiNet’s international capacity and forms part of the organisation’s broader investment in infrastructure and strategic partnerships.
