The public has been urged to prepare for possible flooding as heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected to hit large parts of southern Botswana from tomorrow, the Department of Meteorological Services has warned.

In a weather alert issued on Tuesday, the department under the Ministry of Environment and Tourism said widespread thundershowers and strong winds could affect several districts, including Ghanzi, Kgalagadi, Southern, Southeast, Kgatleng, and Kweneng.

“These conditions will be triggered by the inflow of tropical moisture from the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and instability at medium levels of the atmosphere,” the statement read.

The department cautioned that the expected heavy downpours may cause flash floods in low-lying areas and urged residents to take necessary precautions. “The public is advised to take precautionary measures to stay safe from the likely impacts of the conditions,” it added.

Authorities have also appealed to motorists to exercise caution on slippery roads and avoid attempting to cross flooded bridges and streams.

The Department of Meteorological Services said it will continue to monitor the weather system and issue updates as necessary.

Botswana typically experiences increased rainfall activity during this time of year, but officials say the intensity of the expected weather warrants heightened vigilance across the affected regions.
