The Government has written a letter distancing itself from the ongoing controversy surrounding the liquidation of Mupane Gold Mine emphasizing its non-involvement in the process and reaffirming its commitment to transparency and regulatory integrity.
In a confidential letter addressed to Dumelang Saleshando, Leader of the Opposition and MP for Maun North, Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Joy Kenewendo said that the liquidation is being managed independently by a court-appointed liquidator, Kopanang Thekiso of DSS Botswana, along with legal representatives from Armstrongs Attorneys. The Ministry stated that it has only been periodically briefed on the process and does not directly oversee or influence the proceedings.
The Ministry highlighted that the liquidation involves multiple stakeholders, including the license issuing authority, regulators, and the major creditor, with the liquidator responsible for managing submission protocols, creditor meetings, and disclosure of interested bidders. All creditor meetings are publicly filed with the High Court to ensure transparency.
Regarding the bids received, the Ministry confirmed that ten bids were submitted by the July 13 deadline, with one late submission on July 14 by Nova Africa Resources Special Purpose Vehicle, a consortium involving Turkish companies AgaOne and Nova Africa Resources. Notably, the two leading bidders are Turkish entities, Ulsan Botswana and AgaOne, both registered in May 2025. The government has engaged with Turkish authorities to verify the credibility of these companies, which operate in Turkey and the UAE.
The Ministry emphasized that the selection process adheres strictly to legal and regulatory standards, including demonstrating technical competence, financial solvency, and compliance with Botswana’s mining laws. It reaffirmed that no political influence has affected the process, and all proceedings are conducted transparently.
Minister Kenewendo reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the responsible and ethical development of Botswana’s mineral resources. She expressed the government’s intention to facilitate the reopening of Mupane Mine, which is vital to the economic well-being of Francistown and surrounding regions, aiming to restore employment and economic activity.
The government reaffirmed its dedication to principles of good governance, transparency, and accountability, emphasizing that the process remains independent and fair. The Ministry concluded by wishing Saleshando good health and expressing hope for his return to Parliament.
