    Rail freight gains momentum as cargo volumes and revenue rise

    Rail transport showed strong performance in the third quarter of 2025, with increased freight volumes and higher revenue highlighting its growing role in trade and logistics.

    Statistics Botswana’s Transport and Infrastructure Statistics Brief, Quarter 3, 2025 shows the volume of goods transported by rail reached 242,067 tonnes, reflecting a 12.7 percent increase compared to the previous quarter. Revenue generated from rail freight also rose sharply, climbing 13.8 percent to P60.5 million over the same period.

    August was the busiest month for rail transport, handling 38.1 percent of the quarter’s total freight.

    The Report says Imports accounted for the largest share of rail cargo at 33.3 percent, followed by exports at 28.4 percent and local traffic at 27.1 percent. Local traffic contributed the highest share of revenue, indicating strong domestic demand for rail services.
