As African nations work to harmonize gambling regulations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Botswana has emerged as a continental leader with the Gambling Authority achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification – a first for gaming regulation in the region. This strategic advancement positions Botswana at the forefront of developing standardized gambling frameworks across Africa.

The certification comes at a pivotal moment, coinciding with the appointment of Botswana’s Gambling Authority CEO Emolemo Peter Kesitiwe to the executive committee of the African Organisation for the Harmonisation of Gambling Standards. “This dual achievement creates unprecedented opportunities for Botswana to shape responsible gambling policies across the continent,” Kesitiwe said during the certification ceremony.

Industry analysts have emphasized how the ISO framework addresses critical challenges in Africa’s rapidly growing gambling sector, projected to reach $12 billion by 2027.

Botsile Kebapetse, who recently assumed the presidency of ARSO, emphasized the continental implications: “As Botswana’s Bureau of Standards, we’re now positioned to share this quality management model with other African regulators through ARSO’s harmonization initiatives.”

The Gambling Authority’s transformation under ISO standards has already yielded measurable results, including a 40% reduction in license processing times and implementation of real-time compliance monitoring systems. These improvements come as Botswana prepares for major industry expansion, with new licensing rounds expected to increase sector employment by 30% in 2026.

“This certification isn’t just about better regulation – it’s about building an ecosystem that attracts responsible investment while protecting citizens,” explained Marvin Thokozani Torto, Chairman of the GA Board. The Authority’s innovative approach combines ISO protocols with localized solutions, including Setswana-language responsible gambling materials and community outreach programs.

The achievement also strengthens Botswana’s position in ongoing AfCFTA negotiations regarding cross-border gambling services. “Harmonized standards built on ISO principles will facilitate intra-African trade while maintaining strong consumer protections,” Kesitiwe added, outlining plans to adapt the framework for regional implementation.
