Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) is marking 13 years of building the digital infrastructure underpinning Botswana’s connectivity and economic transformation. Having expanded its national fibre network from approximately 6,000 kilometres to over 14,000 kilometres, the organisation has not only strengthened the country’s integration into regional networks but has also achieved a rare feat: operating as a fully financially sustainable entity without government subvention.

Established in 2013 as the custodian of Botswana’s national broadband infrastructure, BoFiNet has evolved from building the country’s fibre backbone to enabling wider broadband access, digital inclusion, and a more competitive digital economy.

As detailed in its recently published Integrated and Annual Reports, this growth has been achieved while maintaining strict financial discipline and operational efficiency.

The organisation’s journey has been defined by investments that progressively extend the reach of Botswana’s telecommunications infrastructure.

Over the past 13 years, the organisation has invested heavily in digital skills and community empowerment. This includes connecting numerous schools across the country to high-speed internet to enhance ICT education, supporting youth development, and facilitating greater participation by girls and women in ICT.

Beyond major economic centres, BoFiNet has taken connectivity to the farthest corners of the country. Through strategic projects, the organisation has successfully connected 227 gazetted towns and villages in Botswana, out of a target of 500, including villages as far as Gudigwa, Two Rivers, Parakarungu, ensuring that geography is no longer a barrier to digital participation.

Beyond the physical infrastructure, BoFiNet has placed a strong emphasis on its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) mandate.

This includes connecting numerous schools across the country to high-speed internet to enhance ICT education, supporting youth development, and facilitating greater participation by girls and women in ICT.

BoFiNet has also partnered with countless local organisations and enterprises, using connectivity as a tool to drive inclusive socio-economic growth.

“Thirteen years represents more than the growth of our network; it reflects Botswana’s progress towards a digitally connected and competitive economy,” said Dr. Gaone Geoffrey Seleka, Chief Executive Officer of BoFiNet. “Our infrastructure has become an essential enabler of opportunity.

By operating sustainably without government subvention, we are proving that state-owned enterprises can be both commercially viable and deeply committed to social impact.”

A defining milestone in BoFiNet’s recent history was the launch of the Digital Delta Data Centre (DDDC), a Tier III-certified, carrier-neutral facility that provides a foundation for secure data hosting, cloud services, and emerging technologies.

Beyond Botswana’s borders, BoFiNet has strengthened its regional influence, assuming the chairmanship of the Southern Africa Telecommunications Association (SATA) for 2024/25.

Looking ahead, its Horizon 2029 strategy, “Redefining How We Deliver”, places customer experience, sustainable growth, and operational efficiency at the centre of the organisation’s next phase, guided by targets of 95% customer satisfaction, 25% revenue growth, and 25% efficiency savings.

Most recently, its February 2026 Memorandum of Understanding with MTC Namibia established a framework for deeper cross-border fibre cooperation, improved network resilience, and regional digital integration.

During the 2025/26 financial year, BoFiNet completed local access fibre projects in Moshupa, Ramotswa/Taung, and Thamaga, connecting 191 customers and supporting the creation of 210 construction jobs. An upgrade of international connectivity capacity to 1Tbps has further enhanced Botswana’s ability to meet growing demand for reliable digital services.

“Our next chapter is about translating infrastructure into impact,” added Dr. Seleka. “We remain committed to ensuring that the benefits of connectivity extend to every corner of Botswana, creating opportunities for innovation, enterprise, and inclusive growth.”

As it enters its 14th year, BoFiNet reaffirms its commitment to advancing Botswana’s digital ambitions through continued infrastructure investment, strategic regional partnerships, and collaboration across the telecommunications ecosystem.
