The Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) has issued a clarification following widespread reports, particularly on social media, alleging that electricity tariffs for the 2026/27 financial year have been increased by 46%.
According to the Authority, no such decision has been made. BERA said in a statement that while the figure of a 46% increase has been circulating publicly, it originates from an application submitted by the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) and does not represent an approved adjustment.
The regulator confirmed that it is still in the process of reviewing BPC’s tariff application. This process includes a comprehensive assessment of submissions made by stakeholders during the public hearing held on February 10, 2026. Such consultations form a key part of Botswana’s regulatory framework, ensuring that decisions balance the financial sustainability of the power utility with the protection of consumers.
The public has therefore been urged to disregard unverified information circulating online and to rely only on official communication channels for accurate updates. BERA assured consumers that once a decision on the 2026/27 electricity tariffs has been made, it will be formally communicated through its official platforms.
BERA further said any tariff adjustment must follow due regulatory procedures, including stakeholder engagement and careful evaluation of all inputs received. The Authority reiterated that no final determination has been reached at this stage.

The clarification follows heightened public interest in electricity pricing, particularly following fuel price hike as well as public transport fare increase that was subsequently reverseg by the government following tertiary students demonstrations. BERA says until the regulatory process is concluded, any figures being shared remain proposals rather than approved tariffs.
