Los Angeles -Natural diamonds lit up the red carpet at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, with a new favorite emerging among stylists and celebrities: desert diamonds. The earthy-toned stones, ranging from sunlit whites to deep brown hues, appeared on some of the night’s most talked-about looks, signaling a shift away from traditional icy brilliance toward warmer, more individual expressions of luxury.

Among the standout appearances was actor Rose Byrne, nominated for Best Actress for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, who wore one of the most striking jewelry looks of the evening. Byrne chose a sculptural torque necklace set with a 22.58-carat yellow-brown desert diamond, paired with a ring featuring a 16.54-carat Ashoka-cut diamond sourced from Botswana, both one-of-a-kind pieces by design house TAFFIN.

Television host Tamron Hall also embraced the look on Oscars night, choosing whiskey-brown and sunlit-white three-stone diamond earrings and a matching ring by Aneri Jewels. The pieces highlighted the defining idea behind the desert diamond trend: stones shaped by natural elements and valued for their organic tones rather than perfect uniformity.

The Botswana-sourced stone drew particular attention from jewelry insiders, reflecting the growing demand for colored natural diamonds that carry distinctive character and origin stories. Designers say the appeal lies in their individuality, with unusual tones and antique-style cuts offering a more personal alternative to classic white diamonds.

Byrne continued the trend later in the evening at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, wearing desert diamond earrings and a statement ring by Nikos Koulis. The bespoke earrings featured more than 16 carats of brown-yellow diamonds set alongside white stones in a modern white-gold design, reinforcing the night’s theme of warm, expressive color palettes in high jewelry.

Jewelry analysts noted that desert diamonds were only one part of a broader movement toward bolder styling on the red carpet. Closely cropped necklaces, sculptural chokers and diamond brooches also appeared frequently, as celebrities used statement pieces to frame their outfits rather than simply complement them.

With awards season closing on a night filled with warm-hued sparkle, the message from Hollywood was clear: in 2026, individuality-not perfection- is the new luxury.
