The Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) has reported a landmark financial year, achieving record revenues of P265 million in 2023/24. This marks a 46% increase from the previous financial year and a significant milestone as the organization surpassed pre-COVID-19 revenue levels for the second consecutive year.
CAAB’s success reflects the broader recovery of the global aviation industry, which is steadily returning to pre-pandemic performance levels. Passenger traffic at Botswana’s airports increased by 12.9% year-on-year, now just 11.4% shy of 2019/20 figures. Similarly, air cargo volumes rose by 16.9%, boosted by dedicated cargo charter flights and essential government shipments.
As part of its ongoing transformation, CAAB has launched its “Transformation Strategy 2024-2029,” aimed at positioning the Authority as an agile, high-performance entity. Key focus areas include enhanced air cargo operations, with plans to assume management of the cargo terminal at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport by 2025/26. Additionally, airport certification efforts have made headway, with Maun International Airport certified in February 2024. Kasane and PG Matante International Airports are next, with certifications planned for later this year and 2025, respectively.
Underpinned by sound corporate governance, CAAB’s financial performance has been bolstered by aggressive cost containment measures and diversified revenue streams. Despite pandemic-related setbacks, the Authority has rebounded strongly, achieving its highest-ever revenue levels since its inception in 2009.
CAAB remains steadfast in adhering to global safety and security standards, as highlighted by its Effective Implementation score of 80.1%. The organization is also preparing for an ICAO Universal Safety Oversight Audit in 2024 to further enhance its aviation security credentials. These efforts align with the Authority’s ambition to attract new airlines and foster Botswana’s emergence as a regional aviation hub.
Recognizing its employees as its most valuable resource, CAAB has also implemented wellness programs and professional development initiatives to support its workforce. Investments in IT infrastructure and graduate internship programs are also contributing to the Authority’s goal of creating a world-class aviation environment in Botswana.
