Botswana has launched a new certification programme designed to encourage companies to adopt more sustainable business practices as environmental standards become increasingly important to investors and international markets.

The Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) on Tuesday unveiled the Green Mark, a sustainability recognition scheme that will assess and acknowledge businesses that demonstrate strong environmental performance. The initiative expands the country’s existing Pride Mark programme and seeks to embed sustainability more deeply across the private sector.

The launch reflects a broader shift in global commerce, where environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards are increasingly influencing investment decisions, supply chains and market access. BITC argues that Botswana’s competitiveness will depend not only on economic performance but also on its ability to demonstrate responsible environmental stewardship.

Speaking at the launch, BITC chief executive Keletsositse Olebile described the Green Mark as part of a national effort to build a more sustainable economy, saying it would help businesses demonstrate commitments to resource efficiency, responsible production and sound environmental governance.

The agency also sees the Green Mark as a tool for attracting investment. As investors increasingly favour jurisdictions with strong environmental credentials, officials believe the initiative can strengthen Botswana’s reputation as a destination for sustainable business.

Under the programme, participating organisations will be recognised for measures such as waste reduction, energy efficiency, environmental compliance and responsible corporate citizenship. BITC hopes the scheme will encourage wider adoption of sustainable practices while supporting Botswana’s economic diversification and climate-resilience objectives.

The agency also sees the Green Mark as a tool for attracting investment. As investors increasingly favour jurisdictions with strong environmental credentials, officials believe the initiative can strengthen Botswana’s reputation as a destination for sustainable business.

The launch marks the start of a nationwide awareness campaign involving media outreach, digital promotion and stakeholder engagement. The effort will culminate in the inaugural Green Mark Recognition Ceremony, where businesses judged to have demonstrated outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability will be honoured.

For BITC, the challenge will be ensuring that the Green Mark becomes more than a badge. Its success will depend on whether the programme can drive measurable changes in corporate behaviour and help Botswana’s firms compete in a global economy where sustainability is increasingly becoming a prerequisite rather than a choice.
