Speaker of the National Assembly Dithapelo Keorapetse has commended organisers of the Debswana World Athletics Relays, Team Botswana and government departments involved in hosting the event.
Speaking during the official opening of the Third Meeting of the Second Session of the 13th Parliament, Keorapetse described the relays as a successful international sporting event that benefited Botswana’s image, tourism sector and diamond industry.
“It was a magnificent job well done by the athletics association, particularly the LOC, BNSC and Ministry of Sports and Arts,” Keorapetse said.
He also congratulated the Ministry of Minerals for securing sponsorship support for the event.
“Congratulations to the boys and their coaches and Batswana for collective support; infrastructure development grew, tourism grew, and our diamonds received huge mileage — this was indeed the true spirit of IPELEGENG,” he said.
“Congratulations to the Ministry of Minerals for putting together a fantastic sponsorship programme for World Athletic Relays,” he said.
Keorapetse further recognised Team Botswana athletes, including Letsile Tebogo and Busang Kebinatshipi, for their performances.
“Congratulations to Team Botswana, led by Letsile and Kebinatshipi amongst others, for a great job. They continue to shine at the Diamond League,” he said.

The Speaker also acknowledged coaches and supporters for their contribution to the event.

The remarks formed part of the address in which Keorapetse also spoke about governance, democracy, the role of opposition parties, the media and citizen participation in public affairs.
