Leader of Opposition and Maun North MP Dumelang Saleshando has waded into the storm surrounding the controversial liquidation of Mupane Gold Mine, calling for urgent clarity from Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Kenewendo.

In a letter dated July 15, Saleshando—despite being on medical leave—said he felt compelled to raise serious concerns following allegations of irregularities in the bidding process for the mine, Botswana’s only operational gold mine.

Drawing from recent media reports and industry sources, Saleshando outlined five key allegations that he said have triggered growing public anxiety:

Irregular Timeline Adjustments: Some bidders reportedly submitted their proposals on time and in full compliance with stated requirements. However, it is alleged that the timeline was subsequently changed to accommodate a late and initially non-compliant investor.

Suspicious Company Favoritism: A newly formed company—allegedly linked to politically influential families—is said to have been favoured, possibly at the expense of established and qualified bidders.

Unfair Treatment of Citizen Bidders: Saleshando noted that at least one citizen-owned, professional mining consortium had lodged a formal complaint with the Office of the Vice President, alleging they were unfairly sidelined despite meeting all bid requirements.

Political Pressure: The letter suggests that there may have been political interference from within the ministry itself, potentially delaying the process and undermining transparency.

Risk of Inferior Bidders Prevailing: There is growing concern that the outcome may eventually favour less qualified or less financially robust bidders, raising fears of long-term damage to the mining sector.

Saleshando reminded Minister Kenewendo of her dual role as a legislator and custodian of public resources, urging her to uphold fairness and public accountability. “It is my responsibility to provide effective oversight to make sure that outlined rules are observed and citizens have a fair chance of succeeding on merit—not on the basis of political affiliations,” he wrote.

He also aligned his stance with President Duma Boko’s recent remarks at the launch of the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme, in which the president pledged a commitment to radical transparency. Saleshando said his open letter was in the same spirit, calling on the minister to promptly disclose her office’s involvement in the process and respond to the allegations.

The liquidation of Mupane Mine has become a flashpoint for criticism, with growing public scrutiny over the handling of Botswana’s mineral wealth and local investment opportunities.
