Sport will play a leading role in Botswana’s 60th Independence celebrations, with government positioning athletics and community sporting events as key tools for promoting national unity, youth empowerment and healthy living. Launching the 90-day countdown to the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Minister of Sport and Arts Jacob Kelebeng said this year’s programme marks a significant departure from traditional Independence Day commemorations. “Traditionally, Independence celebrations have focused primarily on official ceremonies, military parades and basic cultural performances,” Kelebeng said. “For Botswana’s Diamond Jubilee, Government has deliberately adopted a broader and more inclusive approach to empower communities in various districts, particularly arts and sports as an integral part of the festivities.”
“Unlike previous celebrations that were largely concentrated in one location, the 60th Anniversary has been decentralised to ensure that every district, town and village participates through community events, cultural festivals and local initiatives,” Kelebeng said.
The minister said sport had been elevated from a supporting activity to one of the four strategic pillars underpinning the celebrations.
“Sport has been integrated as a major component of the celebrations because it promotes healthy lifestyles, youth empowerment, social inclusion and national unity. Sporting activities will therefore complement the cultural and artistic programmes throughout the commemorative period,” he said. National and community sporting events will be staged across the country between July and September, with districts, towns and villages expected to host local competitions and activities. The celebrations have also been decentralised to ensure participation beyond major urban centres.

“Unlike previous celebrations that were largely concentrated in one location, the 60th Anniversary has been decentralised to ensure that every district, town and village participates through community events, cultural festivals and local initiatives,” Kelebeng said. Government believes the approach will create opportunities for grassroots sport while strengthening community participation in one of the country’s most significant national milestones.
