Mascom, through its WConnect platform, yesterday brought together women from diverse backgrounds to celebrate International Women’s Day, creating a powerful space for connection, learning, and growth.

In her opening remarks, the Mascom CEO Dzene Makhwade-Seboni emphasised that WConnect is more than an event, it is a growing movement aimed at empowering women across sectors. From students and professionals to entrepreneurs in the informal sector, the initiative continues to evolve “brick by brick,” fostering inclusivity and shared progress.

The CEO highlighted Mascom’s commitment to women’s advancement, pointing to strong female representation in leadership, including executive roles.

The CEO highlighted Mascom’s commitment to women’s advancement, pointing to strong female representation in leadership, including executive roles. She noted that progress for women has never been an individual pursuit, but a collective effort that creates a ripple effect across communities. Initiatives like the recently launched smart classrooms further reflect Mascom’s dedication to shaping future generations, particularly young girls entering STEAM fields.

“Speak your truth, even if your voice shakes,” she urged, reinforcing the importance of courage and authenticity in leadership.

Panel discussions echoed this sentiment, with speakers stressing the value of purpose-driven success and collaboration. UNICEF Education Specialist Leseka Mukokomani and other panelists highlighted that impact knows no hierarchy, every woman’s contribution matters.

Entrepreneur, Founder of Drones for Africa, Marang Mbaakanyi challenged women to redefine success as a shared journey. “Success is not complete if you succeed alone,” she said, encouraging women to create opportunities for others and actively pull them into spaces where they are underrepresented. Discussions also explored the intersection of technology and purpose. Panelists emphasised that innovation, particularly in AI, must be grounded in solving real problems and delivering value to end users. Creativity and storytelling were cited as critical in humanising innovation, especially within Botswana’s emerging creative industries.

The event concluded with a strong call to action for women to show up, remain resilient, and support one another in pursuit of progress.
