Commissioner meets political party reps

Commissioner of Police, Ms Dinah Marathe has assured the Political Parties Representatives that Botswana Police Service (BPS) is ready to play its part of ensuring the security of the upcoming General Election slated for 30th October 2024. 

Ms Marathe made the assurance when welcoming political party representatives at Police Headquarters today (04/09/2024). The Commissioner highlighted that BPS is tasked with the role of creating an environment conducive to fair and free Elections by ensuring the safety of ballots from the polling stations to counting centers. She said providing security during elections is a delicate and important exercise that requires involvement of all stakeholders in ensuring a free and fair elections process.

Ms Marathe called on political parties to take the responsibility of protecting the solemnity and security of the elections, ensuring that they are credible and without any prejudice. The Commissioner further urged them to sensitise their supporters on their role during campaigns and elections as outlined in the Electoral Act. 

She emphasised the need for political parties to work together by regulating their rallies including obtaining permits well on time to allow BPS plan and deploy resource equitably. 

The meeting was called to appraise stakeholders in the election process to make a plea for cooperation and support towards delivering credible election.
