BOFEPUSU acknowledges with appreciation the sustained and concerted efforts of the Government of Botswana, through the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture, in the fight against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) affecting our livestock sector. We extend appreciation to the Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr Edwin Dikoloti whose leadership has been instrumental in coordinating cross-sectoral collaboration, and articulating clear, evidence-based strategies to enhance surveillance, vaccination, and biosecurity.

The labour representatives’ participation, including the discussions held on 22 April 2026, demonstrates the Government’s openness to diverse perspectives and its recognition that effective disease management requires broad-based input, partnership, and shared responsibility. Such engagement strengthens policy practicality, equity, and legitimacy which are essential to the success of any health and agricultural initiative.

BOFEPUSU reaffirms the need for clear, accurate, and accessible information to farmers, workers, traders, and communities who largely depend on subsistence farming for livelihood. Enhanced civic education and participatory engagement will build trust, empower frontline workers, and promote compliance across the sector. We reassure the Government and Acting Minister Dikoloti of continued support for the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture and broader national efforts under the circumstances.

We stand ready to collaborate in policy development, implementation, and outreach that protect our livestock sector, support workers and their families, and preserve Botswana’s agricultural heritage and economic future. In closing, we reaffirm our resolve to work in partnership with the government, the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture, and all stakeholders towards a resilient, informed, and united response to Foot and Mouth Disease. With continued collaboration, transparent communication, and inclusive participation, Botswana will navigate this challenge and emerge stronger.

In solidarity,

Robert R. Rabasimane, Secretary General
