Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Deputy Commander Lieutenant General Joseph Eno Seelo is recovering after suffering a sudden medical emergency while on official duties outside the country, the military has confirmed.
In a response to News&All inquiries the BDF confirmed Lt Gen Seelo experienced the medical emergency earlier this week while on an official assignment abroad. Although the BDF did not disclose the nature of the illness, sources indicated that the incident occurred in Malawi and that the Deputy Commander was airlifted back to Botswana last Saturday for treatment.
“The Deputy Commander was promptly airlifted back to Botswana for further medical evaluation and he is currently in a stable condition, comfortable and recovering well,” the BDF confirmed.
“The BDF appreciates the outpouring of support and concern from the public and the media. However, we respectfully request privacy at this time as the Deputy Commander focuses on a full recovery,” the response said.
Lt Gen Seelo serves as the second-in-command and is one of the country’s most senior military officers. The BDF has not indicated when he is expected to resume official duties. Lt Gen Seelo is one of Botswana’s most senior military officers having served as Deputy Commander of the BDF since 2023, when he was appointed by then President Mokgweetsi Masisi following the redeployment of then Major General Mpho Mophuting to the US as Ambassador-at-Large. Before his appointment, Seelo served as Commander of the Ground Forces Command.
The response was issued by Lieutenant Colonel Fana Maswabi of the Directorate of Protocol and Public Affairs at BDF Headquarters.

His military career has also included international recognition. In 2023, while serving as Commander of Ground Forces, he was inducted into the United States Army War College International Fellows Hall of Fame, becoming only the second Botswana Defence Force officer to receive the honour.
Following the change of government, President Duma Boko retained Seelo in the BDF’s top leadership structure and, in November 2025, elevated him to the rank of Lieutenant General during a ceremony at the Office of the President. The promotion was part of military leadership reshuffle that saw Mpho Mophuting appointed BDF Commander, marking the first time Botswana’s armed forces were led by a four-star General with a Lieutenant General serving as deputy.
