A leading LGBTQ+ rights organization in Botswana has been forced to shut down several satellite offices due to funding shortfalls linked to foreign aid cuts initiated during Donald Trump’s presidency.

“In light of the recent decision by the U.S. administration, specifically President Donald Trump, to pause funding for certain global programs, including those under FHI 360, we regret to inform you of the temporary closure of all drop-in centers in our operations districts outside Gaborone, and our drop in center here in Gaborone is affected only for health service provisions,” said LEGABIBO in a statement. It stated that his decision is effective immediately and will remain until further notice.

“We understand that this situation may cause significant concern and inconvenience. LEGABIBO remains steadfast in our commitment to advocate for the rights and dignity of LGBTQIA+ persons. We are actively exploring alternative ways to continue delivering vital services to our community, albeit in a different capacity,” said LEGABIBO.
