The Alliance for Progressives (AP) has launched a scathing attack on the Leader of the Opposition, Dumelang Saleshando, over remarks suggesting that a sitting government has no obligation to leave public finances in a healthy state for future generations.

In a strongly worded statement issued Tuesday, the AP described Saleshando’s comments as the foundation of a “dangerous and selfish governing philosophy” which it termed the “Saleshando Doctrine.” The party said the doctrine represents short-term thinking and a reckless abandonment of the principle of intergenerational responsibility.

“The AP believes that governance is a sacred trust. A government’s duty is to be a bridge to the future, not a dead end,” the statement read. “It is the fundamental responsibility of any administration to manage public resources prudently, not just for the present, but for the generations to come.”

AP Publicity Secretary Masego Maxwell Mosinyi

Publicity Secretary Masego Maxwell Mosinyi said Saleshando’s remarks were politically irresponsible and a “betrayal” of the opposition’s constitutional role. “We find it particularly shocking that this statement comes from the Leader of the Opposition, an office whose very purpose is to hold government accountable for responsible stewardship. By justifying financial carelessness, he has failed in his most basic role,” Mosinyi said. The AP, a partner in the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) coalition government, used the opportunity to reaffirm its support for the newly established Sovereign Wealth Fund, calling it a practical measure to safeguard Botswana’s financial future. The fund, the party said, underscores its commitment to saving and investing for future generations.

“The AP remains unwavering in its commitment to building a Botswana where wealth is fairly distributed and where every generation builds a stronger foundation for the next,” Mosinyi said.

“We stand for inclusive institutions that foster long-term prosperity, not the extractive and shortsighted politics of the ‘Saleshando Doctrine,’” the statement added. The party further urged citizens to reject what it called “reckless political mindsets” that prioritize temporary political gains over sustainable national growth.“The AP remains unwavering in its commitment to building a Botswana where wealth is fairly distributed and where every generation builds a stronger foundation for the next,” Mosinyi said.

The AP’s remarks come amid heightened debate over fiscal management and long-term economic planning in Botswana, as the coalition government faces scrutiny over its financial reforms and investment policies.
