Gaborone – Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) today officially launched the Digital Delta Data Centre (DDDC), Botswana’s first Tier III-certified carrier-neutral data centre of this capacity, marking a major national milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey. The launch, officiated by Honorable Minister Moeti Mohwasa, was attended by cabinet ministers, senior government officials, industry leaders, international partners and key stakeholders, signifying the national and regional importance of this achievement and its role in strengthening Botswana’s competitiveness in the global ICT landscape.

The DDDC represents the culmination of nearly a decade of vision, planning and determined execution. Conceived in 2016, the project emerged from BoFiNet’s strategic recognition of the need for a modern, resilient national data centre capable of supporting Botswana’s evolving digital ecosystem and positioning the country as a regional digital hub. Speaking at the launch, BoFiNet’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Keabetswe Segole, reflected on the journey to this historic moment. “This data centre has been almost ten years in the making, and today we stand proud of what this long journey has produced. The DDDC was envisioned as the heartbeat of Botswana’s digital economy, an infrastructure built to world-class standard and fully funded through revenue from our own operations, without Government subvention since 2018. That alone is a powerful testament to what our organisation and our people are capable of.”

Mr Segole further highlighted the strategic symbolism behind the DDDC identity. He emphasised that the development of the DDDC reflects the resilience and commitment of the teams who brought it to life. “This project represents the dedication and resilience of our people. What we unveil today is a national asset that strengthens data sovereignty, enhances service reliability and positions Botswana as a trusted gateway for digital services across SADC.”

The migration of Government systems to the DDDC will enhance service delivery, improve availability and ensure the security of citizens’ data. Systems such as driver’s licensing, social security services, Omang and passport applications will benefit from improved reliability and faster access.

BoFiNet’s pursuit of global excellence drove the decision to obtain Uptime Institute certification, the world’s leading benchmark for data centre performance. On 23 October 2025, the DDDC was awarded the prestigious Tier III Certification of Constructed Facility (TCCF), officially confirming that the facility can undergo planned maintenance on critical infrastructure without disrupting operations. Mr Segole said. “It confirms that the DDDC can deliver uninterrupted service and gives our customers the assurance of true business continuity.”

He noted that the data centre will significantly advance the Government of Botswana’s digital transformation priorities. “The migration of Government systems to the DDDC will enhance service delivery, improve availability and ensure the security of citizens’ data. Systems such as driver’s licensing, social security services, Omang and passport applications will benefit from improved reliability and faster access. This is critical for data sovereignty and national security in an era where cyber threats continue to rise.”

Addressing benefits for the private sector, Mr Segole added: “This facility enables innovation in cloud, AI, IoT and digital services while reducing the need for costly in-house data centres and disaster recovery sites. Our vendor-neutral model provides lower latency, superior security and cost efficiencies that drive productivity and competitiveness. Businesses can now deliver faster, more responsive digital experiences to their customers.”

In his welcome remarks, the Minister of Communications and Innovation, Honourable David Tshere, affirmed that the DDDC is aligned with Botswana’s national priorities, noting that Government’s digital-first agenda aims to ensure that every citizen is digitally connected and enabled. He emphasised that the DDDC completes a national ICT ecosystem that already includes extensive backbone fibre, undersea cable investments and regional partnerships. The Minister confirmed that Government systems currently hosted by the Department of Shared Digital Services will be migrated to the DDDC, describing the process as one that will significantly improve national efficiency and service delivery.”

The Chairperson of the BoFiNet Board of Directors, Mr Molimisi Sechaba, expressed gratitude and reaffirmed BoFiNet’s commitment to national progress. He highlighted the importance of the facility to investors, stating that it strengthens Botswana’s position as a ready and competitive destination for global digital investment. He also acknowledged the leadership continuity across successive Boards and executives who contributed to the project’s success, expressing pride in BoFiNet’s achievement in securing Tier III certification and delivering this state-of-the-art national asset.

The Digital Delta Data Centre now stands as a landmark achievement for Botswana, an investment that advances data sovereignty, boosts regional competitiveness, enhances national productivity and positions the country as a strategic digital hub for Southern Africa and beyond.
