President Duma Boko has reaffirmed government’s commitment to establishing industrial hemp as a strategic growth sector following the successful completion of trial cultivation at the National Agricultural Research and Development Institute (NARDI).
During a visit to the Hemp Trial Project today, Boko described the positive trial results as an important milestone in delivering on the government’s pledge to introduce industrial hemp farming and broaden Botswana’s economic base.
He said the successful trials have demonstrated that hemp can be cultivated under Botswana’s diverse climatic conditions, creating confidence for the country to move towards commercial production.
According to the President, the initiative presents an opportunity for Batswana to participate in a high-value agricultural industry with the potential to supply both local and export markets. He added that industrial hemp could become a significant contributor to agricultural development while supporting government’s efforts to reduce dependence on the diamond sector.

President Boko emphasised that developing new industries such as hemp is central to building a more resilient and diversified economy capable of creating sustainable livelihoods for citizens.

Assistant Minister of Lands and Agriculture Motsamai Motsamai echoed the President’s sentiments, stating that government stands ready to support aspiring hemp producers who meet the required regulatory standards.
He noted that commercialisation of the sector is expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity, adding that Botswana must embrace emerging industries that can drive long-term growth beyond mining.
The Hemp Trial Project forms part of government’s wider strategy to promote climate-resilient agriculture and unlock new economic opportunities as the country pursues a more diversified and sustainable future.
