A prominent dental surgeon has been formally charged with corruption and money laundering following investigations into the alleged acceptance of a luxury vehicle in exchange for influencing a government hospital tender.
The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) announced Sunday that Dr. Rotlhe Boalotswe appeared before the Regional Magistrate’s Court for mention alongside co-accused Ega Khinyani. The matter was heard before Magistrate Mareledi Dipate. A second accused person, Mthulisi Sibanda, did not appear in court.
According to the DCEC, the accused face two counts of corruption under Section 25 (1) as read with Section 36 of the Corruption and Economic Crime Act, as well as one count of money laundering contrary to Section 47 (1) as read with Section 47 (3) of the Proceeds and Instruments of Crime Act.
“The accused persons stand charged with two counts of corruption… They are also charged with one count of money laundering,” the DCEC said in a statement issued on March 1.
The charges stem from investigations into the alleged acceptance of a Volkswagen Amarok valued at P445,000. Authorities allege the vehicle was received as a reward for influencing the favourable selection of K-TECH (Pty) Ltd in a tender involving the supply of maxillofacial implants to Princess Marina Hospital.
The tender in question, referenced as CLS/SUP/8333/1203014, relates to the procurement of specialised medical implants, a critical component in oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures. Investigators allege the vehicle was used as an inducement to improperly sway procurement processes in favour of the company.
“The accused persons stand charged with two counts of corruption… They are also charged with one count of money laundering,” the DCEC said in a statement issued on March 1.
The matter has been adjourned to April 14, 2026, for further proceedings.
Representing the State was Rahiman Khan of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), while the accused were represented by defence attorneys Modisa Kebonyemodisa and Atsaki Butale.
