Former President Ian Khama has officially taken his seat as a member of the Ntlo Ya Dikgosi. It is the first time that Khama has taken his traditional leadership following his service at the Botswana Defense Force, as Vice President, and eventually President of Botswana. Khama, who returned to Botswana in late 2024 after three years of self-imposed exile in South Africa, has since assumed his role as Bangwato Paramount Chief.

Khama’s swearing-in comes months after his return, which was met with a mix of political controversy and traditional celebration.
