Old Mutual Botswana has deepened its support for the country’s startup ecosystem through a partnership with Angel Network Botswana, as financial institutions increasingly seek to promote entrepreneurship as part of broader economic diversification efforts.
The insurer’s inaugural sponsorship of the Angel Network Botswana Gala Dinner marks its first formal engagement with the organisation, which connects entrepreneurs with investors, mentors and strategic partners.
As part of the collaboration, Old Mutual will extend its “On The Money” financial education programme to entrepreneurs within the network, providing training aimed at strengthening financial management and business resilience.
Speaking at the event, Interim Group Chief Executive Officer Ricardo Sardien said Botswana’s economic growth depends on creating an environment that allows entrepreneurs to transform innovative ideas into sustainable businesses.
Sardien said angel investors play an important role in addressing financing gaps for early-stage businesses that may not qualify for traditional lending. However, he argued that access to capital alone is insufficient, citing the need for mentorship, networks and institutional support to help businesses scale.
Angel Network Botswana has supported more than 80 startups, mentored over 70 founders and built a network of 40 angel investors during its six years of operation.
Sardien said Angel investors play an important role in addressing financing gaps for early-stage businesses that may not qualify for traditional lending. However, he argued that access to capital alone is insufficient, citing the need for mentorship, networks and institutional support to help businesses scale.
The partnership forms part of Old Mutual Botswana’s strategy to support entrepreneurship through financial education, business protection products and access to expertise from across the wider Old Mutual Group.
The company said it will continue supporting entrepreneurs through financial literacy initiatives and programmes aimed at strengthening the resilience of small businesses.
