The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Honourable Noah S.L.M Salakae, has officially appointed a new Board of Directors for Botswana Railways (BR), with Plato Gaoboi assuming the role of Chairperson. The appointment, made in May 2025, marks a renewed push by the Ministry to reposition the national railway operator as a critical player in the country’s transport and logistics sector.

In a statement issued by the Ministry, Salakae emphasized that the new board will play a central role in advising on strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening BR’s operational efficiency and corporate governance.

Among the initiatives already undertaken through the Board’s strategic guidance is the commencement of a transparent process to appoint a new General Manager, following a mutual agreement to part ways with the former executive. The Ministry has also embarked on a comprehensive review of the Botswana Railways Act to align it with current industry and regulatory demands. Additionally, it has moved to reimburse all outstanding pension dues owed to former BR employees.

In an effort to boost operational capacity, the Ministry is investing in the expansion and refurbishment of BR’s rolling stock. The process of auditing Botswana Railways’ outstanding financials has also been expedited to improve transparency and accountability within the organization.

The Ministry further revealed that the new board has established several committees tasked with driving the implementation of these reforms with urgency and efficiency.

Joining Gaoboi on the board are Kgomotso Hargraves (Vice Chairperson),  Thato Hollauf, Kefalotse Tsalaile-Mmese, Donald Koogotsitse, Leatile Medupe, and Keabeng Nkwada.

“These appointments reflect our commitment to transparency, accountability, and modernization of Botswana Railways,” the statement read. “We are focused on ensuring that BR becomes the preferred logistics partner in the country and remains the most cost-effective mode of transport for bulk commodities.”

The Ministry assured stakeholders and the public of its continued efforts to reform and strengthen Botswana Railways as a vital contributor to national development.
