GABORONE – The United States government has suspended all funding, contracts, and programs supporting civil society organizations in Botswana, a decision that has sent shockwaves through the country’s non-governmental sector. The directive, issued by President Donald J. Trump’s administration, was communicated by the U.S. Embassy in Gaborone to several affected organizations, including the Botswana Council of Non-Governmental Organizations (BOCONGO).
The funding suspension has had an immediate impact on NGOs that depend on U.S. support for critical services, particularly those receiving aid through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) via the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Many organizations providing HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care services have been forced to scale down operations, with some temporarily shutting down due to financial constraints.
In response, BOCONGO expressed deep concern over the decision, emphasizing the crucial role NGOs play in Botswana’s development landscape. The organization urged the Government of Botswana to intervene and consider alternative funding mechanisms to ensure continuity in service provision.
“The role that NGOs play in Botswana’s development landscape cannot be overstated. We urge the government to engage with relevant stakeholders to address this situation and mitigate its impact,” BOCONGO stated in a press release.
The sudden funding halt has raised alarm among civil society leaders, health advocates, and development experts who fear the disruption of essential services, particularly in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Botswana has been a leader in combating the epidemic, largely due to a well-coordinated response supported by international partners such as the United States.
While the development has caused widespread concern, BOCONGO has appealed for patience among stakeholders, assuring them that engagements with relevant authorities and partners are ongoing to find an amicable resolution. The organization pledged to keep affected groups and the public informed as discussions progress.
