GABORONE – The atmosphere at the Fairgrounds this week is one of palpable ambition, as the 18th Botswana Consumer Fair opened on Monday, positioning itself as far more than a traditional trade show by integrating business development, social responsibility, and community empowerment into its core.
The theme, “Embracing Technology and Innovation for Economic Transition,” was brought to life not just in the exhibits but in the very structure of the event. While Business Botswana President, Neo Nwako, championed the cause of SMMEs as “the backbone of innovation,” Fairground Holdings CEO, Gorata Gabaraane, unveiled the practical tools offered to them. She announced the new Job Creation Forum and Trader’s Hub, a week-long intensive platform featuring masterclasses and B2B meetings designed to provide SMEs with the “tools, knowledge, and networks they need to scale.” This direct empowerment initiative answers Nwako’s call for a diversified economy by actively building the capacity of local entrepreneurs.
Beyond commerce, the Fair’s heart is shown through its impactful “Pink Houses” initiative. Gabaraane detailed the six dedicated shops provided free of charge to community-based projects from the Babusi Ward and local organisations. “These spaces empower communities to generate sustainable income for causes such as education, women’s empowerment, youth entrepreneurship, and healthcare,” she stated, proving that economic growth and social development are intrinsically linked. This focus on inclusive, human-centred development echoed Nwako’s assertion that “economic transition must be inclusive, human-centred, and empowering.”
Board Director Boitshwarelo Lebang-Kgetse drew attention to this powerful blend of commerce and community. She urged visitors to see the broader narrative, where “each exhibitor is contributing to a larger narrative — a narrative where Botswana asserts itself as a hub of entrepreneurship, ingenuity, and excellence.” The Fair stands as a microcosm of a more holistic and compassionate economic model, where success is measured not only in revenue but in community impact and sustainable development.
