Entrepreneurship remains one of the most powerful drivers of economic growth, innovation and job creation in Botswana and across the African continent. As economies evolve and seek to diversify beyond traditional sectors, the ability of entrepreneurs to build resilient and scalable businesses has become more important than ever.
At Absa Bank Botswana, we believe that empowering entrepreneurs is central to unlocking Africa’s economic potential and building a sustainable private sector led future.
One important initiative advancing this vision is our partnership with the Stanford Graduate School of Business through the Stanford Seed Transformation Programme (STP), alongside the De Beers Group, which was launched in 2024. The programme continues to serve as a valuable platform for strengthening entrepreneurship across Botswana and the broader Southern African region.
Through our business banking network, Absa Bank Botswana plays an active role in identifying promising founders and Chief Executive Officers and connecting them with opportunities that can strengthen their strategic leadership and accelerate the growth of their businesses.
The Stanford Seed Transformation Programme is a ten-month executive education programme designed specifically for founders and CEOs of established businesses operating in emerging markets. It combines in person and online learning delivered by Stanford Graduate School of Business faculty, experienced local experts and Stanford trained advisors.
Participants engage in intensive class sessions, workshops and peer learning platforms that equip them with practical tools, strategic frameworks and leadership capabilities needed to scale and transform their enterprises.
Eligible entrepreneurs are founders or CEOs of for-profit companies with annual revenues between US$300,000 and US$15 million, supported by a management team of at least two additional members. These businesses represent a critical segment of the economy. They have moved beyond the start-up phase but require stronger strategic capabilities and leadership depth to grow sustainably.
At Absa, our role is to ensure that entrepreneurs within our ecosystem are aware of and able to access opportunities such as the Stanford Seed Transformation Programme. By inviting clients to information sessions and encouraging participation, we help expose business leaders to global insights and strategic thinking that can reshape how they approach growth, governance and operational excellence.
Importantly, the value of this initiative extends beyond those who are ultimately selected for the programme. Exposure to global leadership development opportunities often encourages entrepreneurs to reevaluate their business models, strengthen internal management structures and prepare their organisations for the next phase of growth.
For Botswana, initiatives such as this align strongly with the country’s broader development ambitions. Government has consistently emphasised the need to build a dynamic private sector driven economy where productivity, competitiveness and innovation sit at the centre of national development priorities. Strong entrepreneurial leadership will play a decisive role in achieving this vision.
The recent renewal of the partnership between Stanford Graduate School of Business and the De Beers Group, accompanied by a US$2.3 million funding commitment extending the programme through 2028, represents an important milestone. It reinforces a shared commitment to supporting the development of high potential enterprises across Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

By equipping founders and CEOs with advanced leadership capabilities and strategic business tools, programmes such as the Stanford Seed Transformation Programme strengthen the foundations upon which scalable African enterprises can grow. These businesses in turn contribute to economic diversification, employment creation and the development of competitive industries that can participate meaningfully in regional and global markets.
At Absa Bank Botswana, supporting entrepreneurs is closely aligned with our purpose of empowering Africa’s tomorrow, together, one story at a time. Our commitment to the small and medium enterprise sector goes beyond providing financial services. We see ourselves as partners in growth connecting entrepreneurs to knowledge, networks and opportunities that enable them to lead with confidence in an increasingly complex business environment.
The continued collaboration between Absa Bank Botswana, Stanford Graduate School of Business and the De Beers Group demonstrate the impact that can be achieved when financial institutions, global academic partners and industry leaders work together with a shared vision.
As we continue to engage our business banking clients in opportunities such as the Stanford Seed Transformation Programme, our objective remains clear. It is to ensure that Botswana’s entrepreneurs are equipped not only to navigate today’s economic challenges, but also to scale their businesses, create jobs and contribute meaningfully to the country’s long-term prosperity.
Through partnerships that combine global expertise with local commitment, we can help shape a stronger entrepreneurial ecosystem where Botswana’s business leaders are empowered to innovate, grow and drive sustainable economic development for generations to come.
