A new partnership between FNB Insurance Brokers Botswana and Hollard Insure is aiming to reshape how renewable energy projects are financed and protected in Botswana.
The two firms have introduced a “cradle to grave” insurance solution, the first of its kind in the country, designed to cover risks across the full lifecycle of renewable energy projects. The product targets developers, installers, suppliers and operators working in solar, wind and battery energy storage systems, sectors that are expanding as Botswana seeks to diversify its energy mix.
The launch, announced in Gaborone, comes as renewable energy projects grow in scale and complexity, often exposing gaps in traditional insurance products that were not built to handle the technical, regulatory and financial risks unique to clean energy infrastructure.
“Insurance should be an enabler, not a barrier and with this launch we are reinforcing our commitment to supporting the energy transition with solutions that are as innovative as the projects themselves,” said Mosadinkwe Mosinyi. “Cradle to grave is available immediately for all renewable energy projects with capacity supported by our insurance partners Hollard Insure.”
According to Pako Robert Morapedi, the product responds to growing uncertainty in the sector. “Renewable energy developers are navigating increasing volatility—throughout all stages of the renewable energy project, from development stage through construction and operation,” he said.
The offering provides customised coverage spanning the transportation of equipment, construction, delays in start-up and business interruption during operations. It also includes protection against equipment failure, third-party liabilities, performance shortfalls and natural catastrophe risks.

The solution also offers flexible policy structures and access to specialised renewable energy risk expertise and claims support, areas that industry players say are critical to improving project bankability.
FNB Insurance Brokers and Hollard Insure said they will continue to collaborate with industry partners to develop solutions that support resilient, scalable and sustainable energy investments across Botswana.
