Gaborone stepped into the global spotlight on Friday evening as the 2026 Debswana World Athletics Relays opened with a spectacle that blended sport, culture and national identity into a single, vibrant showcase.

Held at the University of Botswana Indoor Sports Complex, the ceremony marked a historic first: the relays taking place on African soil. The atmosphere was electric, with colour, sound and movement combining to signal Botswana’s arrival as a host of major international sporting events.

Rather than a conventional formal opening, organisers leaned into a festival-like programme that celebrated local talent. The stage featured an eclectic mix of artists, from contemporary performers such as Ezra Neethings and Han-C to the distinctly traditional stylings of Charma Gal. Their performances were complemented by appearances from Dato Seiko and Dr Vom, while the Mophato Dance Theatre brought choreography that fused heritage with modern expression.

Choral and spoken-word elements added further depth. The KTM Choir delivered layered vocal performances, while poets Moroka Moreri and Mumsy used verse to reflect on unity and the country’s cultural identity.

Formally declaring the games open, President Duma Boko framed the event as a turning point. He described Botswana’s hosting of the relays as evidence of Africa’s readiness to stage global competitions, and called on citizens to embody Botho, the Setswana principle centred on respect and shared humanity, in welcoming visitors.

The international athletics community echoed that sentiment. Sebastian Coe, speaking on behalf of World Athletics, praised the reception afforded to teams and officials, and acknowledged the role of domestic sponsors in bringing the event to fruition. He also pointed to a longer-term benefit tied to the relays, highlighting the development work associated with Letsile Tebogo’s youth-focused initiative, which is expected to form part of the event’s legacy.

Attention now turns to the competition itself. More than 700 athletes representing 40 nations are set to compete across the weekend in a series of relay events that double as qualifiers for major international championships. Beyond podium finishes, winners will receive medals distinguished by a uniquely local touch: each piece is set with natural diamonds sourced from Botswana.

For a country better known in athletics for individual sprint success, the relays represent both an organisational challenge and an opportunity to redefine its place in the sport. If the opening ceremony is any indication, Botswana is intent on making a lasting impression, both on and off the track.
