A group of 18 Antwerp diamond companies has funded a shipment of life-saving medicines to Botswana, providing treatment for about 35,000 patients living with cardiovascular disease and diabetes for the next year.

The final consignment arrived in Gaborone this week through an initiative coordinated by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) in partnership with the Botswana government.

The programme was launched after Botswana declared a State of Emergency in 2025 following a critical shortage of essential medicines. In response, 18 Antwerp-based diamond firms contributed funds for the procurement of medication, while AWDC coordinated the effort and worked with the government to ensure delivery. The donation highlights the long-standing relationship between Botswana, one of the world’s largest natural diamond producers, and Antwerp, the world’s leading diamond trading hub. Diamond trade between Botswana and Belgium was valued at about $963 million in 2025.

The participating companies funded the purchase of the medicines, which are expected to ease pressure on Botswana’s healthcare system while strengthening ties between producing and trading nations.

AWDC President Isidore Mörsel said the initiative demonstrated that the partnership between Botswana and Antwerp extends beyond commercial ties.

“When Botswana faced an urgent healthcare challenge, our industry responded because our relationship extends far beyond commercial transactions,” Mörsel said.

Minerals and Energy Minister Bogolo Joy Kenewendo said the project reflected the broader value created by the natural diamond industry.

“This initiative is a powerful reminder that the natural diamond story is ultimately about people,” she said.

Health Minister Stephen Modise said the medicines would help secure treatment for thousands of Batswana and illustrated how the diamond industry can contribute to sustainable development.
