BoFiNet, the custodian of Botswana’s national broadband infrastructure, has announced the upcoming launch of the Digital Delta Internet Exchange Point (Digital Delta IX), a groundbreaking platform set to transform how internet traffic flows within and through Botswana. The announcement marks the next chapter in Botswana’s digital transformation journey, building on the foundation laid by the Digital Delta Data Centre (DDDC), Botswana’s first and only Uptime Institute Tier III- certified, carrier-neutral facility of its scale.
Speaking on this development, BoFiNet Chief Executive Officer Dr. Geoffrey Seleka described the IXP as a defining moment for the nation’s digital economy. “The world is transforming at a pace we have never witnessed before. From the Internet of Things and big data to cloud computing and big data, the global economy is being built on a foundation of ones and zeros. In this new reality, data is the most valuable currency, and the infrastructure that houses, protects, and connects it is the bedrock of national prosperity. Speed, security and reliability dictate how relevant one remains in this fast-paced digital world,” Dr Seleka said.
“While the DDDC provides the vault for our nation’s digital assets, the next logical step is to ensure that this data moves with speed, efficiency, and intelligence,” Dr. Seleka explained. “This is where the next chapter of Botswana’s digital journey begins.”
The Digital Delta IX will allow Internet Service Providers, mobile operators, content providers, and cloud services providers to exchange local traffic directly within Botswana, rather than routing it through international networks.
This initiative will keep local traffic in Botswana, dramatically improving internet speeds, reducing costs for operators and consumers, and creating a more resilient internet ecosystem
for all Batswana, and positioning Botswana as a regional digital hub and gateway for the entire SADC region.
“While the DDDC provides the vault for our nation’s digital assets, the next logical step is to ensure that this data moves with speed, efficiency, and intelligence,” Dr. Seleka explained. “This is where the next chapter of Botswana’s digital journey begins.”
According to Dr. Seleka, the IXP will attract global content providers, cloud services providers, and technology companies to Botswana, creating a “magnet effect” that drives investment, creates jobs, and sparks innovation across sectors as diverse as fintech, health-tech, and artificial intelligence. “For Batswana, this digital revolution presents an unprecedented opportunity. As we work to diversify our economy and build a future beyond diamonds, we must recognise that our nation’s competitiveness will be defined by our digital ambition. This is about national security, economic resilience, and our ability to participate in the global digital economy on our own terms,” he said.
