Absa Bank Botswana has attained EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) Certification, marking a key milestone in its sustainability journey and reinforcing its commitment to responsible business and environmental stewardship.

This achievement demonstrates progress in integrating sustainability into operations. Currently, 23% of Absa Botswana’s total floor area is EDGE certified, exceeding the 9% Environmental Action Plan target for 2027 and surpassing the 18% target set for 2030.

EDGE is a green building certification system focused on resource-efficient design and performance. It provides a recognised framework for improving environmental efficiency in energy use, water use, and building materials.

For Absa Bank Botswana, this achievement is part of a broader effort to embed environmental considerations into operations and value creation for stakeholders.

Commenting on the award, Khrishnan Menon, Chief Operating Officer, said the certification highlights the importance of turning sustainability commitments into measurable action.

Commenting on the award, Khrishnan Menon, Chief Operating Officer, said the certification highlights the importance of turning sustainability commitments into measurable action.

“Sustainability is an important part of how we think about responsible business and long-term value creation.

Achieving EDGE Certification across 23% of our total floor area, ahead of our 2027 target, demonstrates meaningful progress in turning our environmental commitments into tangible action.”

This achievement supports Absa Botswana’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda and Environmental Action Plan, both aimed at strengthening the Bank’s approach to responsible and sustainable business.

“For us, this is not simply about achieving certification, instead it is about strengthening how we measure and manage our environmental footprint, while exploring how credible green-building standards can support broader sustainable finance opportunities for our clients and the markets we serve.”

Absa Bank Botswana recognises that its sustainability responsibilities extend beyond its own operations.

The EDGE Certification milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the Bank’s environmental footprint and the broader role financial institutions play in supporting sustainable economic development.

The Bank continues to explore ways to contribute to a more resilient and sustainable economy through its business, partnerships, and engagement with clients and communities.

This creates an opportunity for Absa Botswana to apply the principles of its certification beyond its own operations.

Over time, green-building certification can support discussions with property developers, commercial real estate owners, and other clients seeking to enhance the environmental credentials of their assets and explore green-finance solutions.

The EDGE Certification milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the Bank’s environmental footprint and the broader role financial institutions play in supporting sustainable economic development.

The Bank will continue to build on this progress, as sustainability remains central to its long-term approach to responsible business and value creation.
