Gaborone, Botswana – The Assistant Minister of Communications and Innovation Shawn Ntlhaile recently launched the National ICT Summit and Awards 2025, hosted by the Botswana Information Technology Society (BITS) at Cavista Technologies at CBD. The event brought together industry leaders, academics, innovators, and policymakers to discuss the critical role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Botswana’s national development and digital economy.

Ntlhaile emphasized Botswana’s commitment to digital transformation as a cornerstone of Vision 2036, highlighting ICT as a strategic pillar for economic growth, governance, and social inclusion. “ICT is not just a tool; it is the bedrock of inclusive national development,” he stated. “From e-health to smart agriculture, fintech to e-learning, Botswana’s future is digital.”

The Assistant Minister outlined Botswana’s progress in digital infrastructure, citing initiatives such as the SmartBots Strategy, the Digital Transformation Strategy, and the Innovation Fund. These efforts aim to position Botswana as a regional leader in digital innovation while ensuring no citizen is left behind. He commended advancements in national broadband infrastructure, the Botswana National Digital Identity system, and the rise of tech hubs and incubation centers.

Ntlhaile underscored the digital economy’s potential to drive job creation, improve governance, and enhance education and healthcare services. “Data is currency, innovation is capital, and digital skills are the new oil,” he remarked. However, he acknowledged persistent challenges, including the digital divide, cybersecurity threats, and infrastructure gaps, particularly affecting rural communities, women, and persons with disabilities.

To address these challenges, the government pledged to invest in broadband expansion, strengthen digital literacy programs, and foster public-private partnerships. Hon. Ntlhaile called on all stakeholders—businesses, academia, civil society, and youth—to collaborate in building a resilient digital ecosystem. “Botswana’s greatest asset is its people,” he said. “We must empower our youth and women to lead in tech innovation.”

The National ICT Summit and Awards 2025 will serve as a platform for knowledge-sharing, innovation showcases, and partnership-building. Ntlhaile urged participants to align Botswana’s strategies with global frameworks like the African Union Digital Transformation Strategy and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
