Botswana is bracing for very hot to extremely hot conditions with temperatures expected to reach 40°C in some parts of the country between October 13 and 22.

The Department of Meteorological Services has warned that temperatures ranging from 36°C to 40°C are expected across most parts of the country, with the highest readings likely in northern Botswana.

In a weather advisory issued through the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the department urged members of the public to take precautions against the extreme heat, warning of persistently high temperatures over the coming days.

The hot conditions are expected to continue for 10 days, placing much of the country under sustained high temperatures.

People have also been urged to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during the hottest parts of the day, and to seek shade or remain in cool areas whenever possible.

According to the department, the heat is being driven by persistent northerly winds transporting hot air into Botswana, coupled with a high-pressure system in the middle levels of the atmosphere.

The combination is promoting the accumulation of heat near the Earth’s surface, resulting in the prolonged spell of high temperatures.

The department has advised the public to drink plenty of water and other suitable fluids regularly to prevent dehydration.

People have also been urged to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during the hottest parts of the day, and to seek shade or remain in cool areas whenever possible.

Those who must venture outdoors have been advised to wear wide-brimmed hats or use umbrellas for protection against direct sunlight.

The department further urged the public to limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest periods of the day.

The warning comes as temperatures are expected to remain elevated across much of the country, with northern areas likely to experience the highest readings.

The Department of Meteorological Services said it would continue monitoring conditions and issue further updates as necessary.

Members of the public are encouraged to follow official weather advisories and take the recommended precautions throughout the period of extreme heat.
