Small in name, grand in spirit: Kanana Nyana brings a new level of exclusivity to the Okavango Delta

If there is something increasingly rare in modern travel, it is true solitude. In an age where luxury is often measured by scale, Botswana’s Okavango Delta continues to prove that the most meaningful safari experiences are often found in its quietest corners.

This coming October, that philosophy finds its newest expression with the opening of Kanana Nyana, an intimate new safari camp from Ker & Downey Botswana, one of the country’s most respected safari operators.

Opening on October 15, 2026, Kanana Nyana is tucked into one of the Delta’s richest wildlife areas bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. Its name comes from the Setswana word nyana, meaning “small”, a fitting tribute to a camp designed for just eight guests at a time. Yet while small in size, the experience promises to be anything but.

Thorstein Veblen, an American economist who was prolific in the early 20th century, once argued that luxury depends on scarcity and rivalrousness. He believed that a service is truly luxurious not because it is costly, but because of its exclusivity.

According to Ker & Downey Botswana, the camp’s name “pays homage to the Setswana word for small, celebrating the rarity of Kanana Nyana’s exclusivity with a maximum of eight guests.”

Set amid the waterways, floodplains and wildlife corridors that have made the Okavango Delta one of Africa’s most celebrated wilderness destinations, Kanana Nyana has been conceived as a retreat where guests can reconnect with nature through simplicity, privacy and thoughtful design.

The camp reflects what Ker & Downey describes as “an enduring philosophy of balance”, celebrating “both the grandeur of the Okavango Delta and the intimacy of detail.”

Rather than competing with the landscape, the camp embraces it. Natural light, open spaces and carefully selected materials create an atmosphere that encourages guests to slow down and absorb the rhythms of the Delta.

The camp also reinforces Botswana’s position as a leader in low-volume, high-value tourism. By limiting guest numbers while maximizing access to exceptional wildlife and pristine wilderness, the country continues to attract discerning travellers looking for authentic experiences rather than crowded attractions.

“More than architectural elegance, Kanana Nyana embodies a philosophy of thoughtful, considered design, deeply rooted in Botswana,” the company says. “Every element has been meticulously crafted to create an atmosphere of quiet serenity, where space, light and materiality work in harmony to immerse guests fully in the tranquil surroundings of the Okavango Delta.”

The result is an experience that feels less like a hotel and more like a seamless extension of its surroundings; a place where mornings begin with birdsong, afternoons unfold beneath vast African skies and evenings are accompanied by the distant calls of wildlife.

For travellers seeking exclusivity without excess, Kanana Nyana reflects a growing trend in high-end safari tourism: fewer rooms, deeper immersion and a stronger connection to place.

Kanana Nyana joins Ker & Downey Botswana’s portfolio of camps spread across some of the country’s most iconic ecosystems, from the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve to the Central Kalahari.

Since pioneering luxury safaris in Botswana in 1968, the company has built a reputation for combining world-class hospitality with conservation stewardship and community development. Today, its footprint extends beyond Botswana, with its first Zambian property set to open in the vast Liuwa Plain National Park.

For visitors arriving through Maun, the gateway to the Delta, the opening of Kanana Nyana offers another compelling reason to venture deeper into one of Africa’s last great wildernesses. In a destination renowned for its grandeur, Kanana Nyana offers a reminder that some of the most memorable safari moments come not from abundance, but from intimacy. The privilege of sharing one of the world’s most extraordinary natural landscapes with only a handful of fellow travellers may well be the greatest luxury of all.
