A large-scale petition campaign is underway among students in Botswana, aiming to secure government funding for tertiary education. According to a formal notification issued to the Ministry of Higher Education, students are rallying to demand the fulfillment of a promise for a P2,500.00 tertiary allowance.

The petition, expected to mobilize thousands of students from Botswana’s tertiary institutions, is slated for delivery on August 8, 2025. The initiative has already garnered over 2,680 signatures, reflecting widespread support among the student community.

Eric Karabelo, the petition starter, emphasized the importance of the movement. “This petition is a call for our government to honor its commitment and support the educational aspirations of our youth,” he stated. The petition serves as a prerequisite for students seeking permits to gather and march in protest.

In the official communication, the students request acknowledgment and confirmation of the petition’s receipt to facilitate their march. The initiative underscores mounting frustration over the government’s perceived non-fulfillment of promises to assist tertiary students financially.

The movement highlights ongoing concerns regarding government support for higher education and symbolizes a collective effort by students to advocate for their rights and future.

The Ministry of Higher Education has yet to issue a formal response but the petition’s organizers remain optimistic about engaging authorities to meet their demands.
