The Botswana Golden Grand Prix is back in the Gold Label category, restoring the meet’s standing on the international athletics calendar after a year in Silver and giving Glody Dube a chance to put a difficult chapter behind him.

The 2027 edition is scheduled for 24 April at the National Stadium in Gaborone, where Dube’s Golden Door Sports Agency will look to turn the reinstated status into a compelling proposition for international athletes, sponsors and spectators at the 22,000-seat venue.

The return is significant beyond the label itself. In athletics, classification can influence the quality of the field a meeting attracts, the ranking points available to competitors and the prize money on offer. For Botswana, it also restores an important opportunity to bring elite competition to home soil.

The Golden Grand Prix was downgraded after the 2025 edition, held in Gaborone in April, amid missed World Athletics timelines and concerns surrounding the readiness and certification of the National Stadium track.

But the Gold Label has not come without a reminder of how quickly a meet’s international standing can be affected by operational setbacks.

The Golden Grand Prix was downgraded after the 2025 edition, held in Gaborone in April, amid missed World Athletics timelines and concerns surrounding the readiness and certification of the National Stadium track.

The track refurbishment had not been completed as required, and the surface had not received World Athletics certification at the time of the competition.

The challenges followed an already turbulent period for Dube. World Athletics had previously terminated its contract with him to stage the 2024 edition before he regained the rights with only two months left to prepare for the meeting.

The circumstances placed the organisers under considerable pressure, with the venue’s readiness emerging as a critical factor in satisfying international requirements. Dube, a former Botswana middle-distance runner who owns the meeting through Golden Door Sports Agency, nevertheless maintained that the downgrade would not define the event’s future.

Speaking to the media in 2025, he said the objective was to address the shortcomings and work within World Athletics’ requirements.

“We were confident that we would get back our Gold status. What we needed to do was work hard and do things according to World Athletics requirements,” Dube said.

The stadium project had been a particular source of difficulty, with construction continuing close to competition day.

Dube also played down the suggestion that the Silver classification had fundamentally changed the nature of the competition, while acknowledging the practical consequences for athletes.

“The deadlines they are talking about include the track. As you might be aware, even on the eve of the event, the contractor was on site working, but at the end of the day no one should be blamed for that,” he said.

Dube also played down the suggestion that the Silver classification had fundamentally changed the nature of the competition, while acknowledging the practical consequences for athletes.

“Yes, points will change, given that Gold earns more points than Silver on the athletes’ performances, and again the athletes are paid more in Gold than competing in the Silver meet,” he said.

The restoration of Gold status therefore gives the Golden Grand Prix a stronger platform as it begins preparations for 2027.
