The government has launched the Bonno National Housing Programme, an ambitious initiative aimed at delivering 100,000 affordable homes by 2029. Minister of Water and Human Settlement Onneetse Ramogapi announced the initiative during a press briefing on Tuesday, highlighting the government’s commitment to providing decent housing for all Batswana.
“The Bonno National Housing Programme is not just about building houses but about creating sustainable communities,” Ramogapi said. “We want to ensure that homeownership is within reach for every Motswana, regardless of their financial standing.”
The initiative was officially launched on March 20 in Mabutsane following a comprehensive review of existing housing schemes. The government aims to address the country’s housing deficit while aligning with Vision 2036, the National Development Plan (NDP 11 and 12), and global sustainability goals.
Bonno encompasses various housing schemes designed to cater to different income brackets. The Integrated Poverty Alleviation and Housing Scheme targets those without formal employment, while the Social Housing Scheme focuses on providing housing for the needy. The Bonno Turnkey Housing Scheme is designed for individuals earning between P4,400 and P95,000 per year, while the Bonno Home Loan Improvement Scheme assists low-to-middle-income earners in upgrading their homes. The Bonno Housing Support for D4 & Equivalent Salary Scheme is specifically designed for the working class earning between P95,001 and P282,120 annually. Additionally, a Rent-to-Buy option allows citizens to gradually own homes through Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) and private developers.
Ramogapi revealed that the revamped program expands the target audience and introduces redesigned house plans to improve affordability and accessibility. “We have raised the maximum income threshold from P52,000 to P95,000 per year, allowing more Batswana to qualify,” he stated. “The loan amount remains at P90,000, repayable over 20 years with no interest, except for a 10% penalty interest on defaults.”
Applications for Bonno can be submitted through District Council Offices nationwide. Ramogapi urged Batswana to take advantage of the initiative, reiterating that housing remains a government priority.
“This is about giving Batswana dignity and security,” he said. “We are committed to making homeownership a reality for as many people as possible.”
