Lobatse – Ambassador Bridgette Motsepe has been vindicated in a landmark defamation case following a settlement agreement with the Government of Botswana, effectively closing a dark chapter of politically motivated allegations that falsely linked her to a multi-billion-dollar money laundering scheme. The resolution, finalized at the Botswana High Court on June 27, 2025, includes an unreserved apology from the government and a formal disavowal of the claims made during the controversial “Butterfly Case.”
The allegations originated from a 2019 affidavit by investigator Jako Hubona, which claimed Motsepe co-signed 17 fraudulent bank accounts used to siphon US$10 billion from the Bank of Botswana. International financial institutions including the South African Reserve Bank and Standard Bank refuted the existence of the transactions and the accounts. A 2020 independent report commissioned by Motsepe and produced by Omnia Strategy LLP and Alaco Limited decisively debunked the accusations.
Speaking after the settlement, UK barrister Cherie Blair, who led the independent probe, said the case exemplifies the dangers of state power being used to suppress political opponents and violate individual rights. “This case is not only about justice for Ambassador Motsepe — it is about safeguarding the rights of individuals across Africa,” Blair stated.
Motsepe emphasized her love for Botswana, reiterating that her legal pursuit was never meant to harm the country but to preserve its proud tradition of fairness and accountability. The new government, under President Duma Boko, has pledged to investigate the origins of the fabricated claims that targeted not only Motsepe but other prominent figures including former President Ian Khama, the late Isaac Kgosi, and intelligence officer Wilhelmina Maswabi.
