Botswana is priviledged to host the 52nd ZaZiBoNa meeting, a pivotal, week-long gathering of assessors from National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. This event reinforces the country’s commitment to regional integration and public health excellence through regulatory cooperation. This important meeting continues to be a cornerstone for improving access to essential medicines across our region.

ZaZiBoNa is widely recognized as a pioneering model of work-sharing in medicines regulation. Over the past decade, it has played a transformative role in improving access to safe, effective, and quality-assured medicines throughout the region. Now in its 52nd session, ZaZiBoNa continues to enhance regulatory efficiency across SADC by reducing duplication of effort, harmonizing regulatory requirements, and aligning decision-making processes.

Collaboration through work-sharing platforms is essential for NRAs as it enhances regulatory efficiency, strengthens capacity, and accelerates access to safe, effective, and quality-assured medicines. By pooling expertise, aligning regulatory standards, and reducing duplication of effort, NRAs can make faster, more consistent decisions that benefit public health across the region. These platforms also foster mutual trust, build technical competence, and support regulatory convergence laying the foundation for sustainable, regional health security and stronger, more resilient health systems.

ZaZiBoNa is more than a work-sharing initiative it is a model of regional integration in action, built on shared values of public health protection, transparency, and scientific excellence. It serves as a mechanism to develop mutual trust and confidence for possible regulatory collaboration and cooperation. It also provides a valuable platform for training and capacity building for assessors within member National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs).

“This initiative has significantly enhanced regulatory efficiency by accelerating access to essential medicines and promoting harmonized standards across member states,” added Sakhile Dube-Mwedzi, the coordinator of the initiative. “It is through such platforms that we ensure the public across Southern Africa benefits from timely and equitable access to life-saving health products.”

Botswana’s hosting of the 52nd ZaZiBoNa meeting underscores the country’s leadership and continued investment in strengthening health systems and regulatory frameworks that serve regional public health needs.
