The Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) has set an ambitious course for the nation’s aviation industry with the launch of its “Transformation Strategy 2024-2029.” This blueprint aims to revolutionize Botswana’s aviation landscape, focusing on operational excellence, enhanced safety standards, and financial sustainability.

As the global aviation sector rebounds from the COVID-19 pandemic, CAAB has embraced the opportunity to realign its operations and set a new standard for efficiency. The strategy, themed “Transforming CAAB into an Agile High-Performance Civil Aviation Authority – A New Beginning,” emphasizes leveraging technology, strengthening governance, and fostering innovation to create a world-class aviation ecosystem.

“Our mission is to sustainably regulate and manage airspace and airports while driving the growth of Botswana’s aviation industry,” said Basimane Bogopa, Chairman of the CAAB Board.

Safety and security remain top priorities for CAAB as it aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. With an Effective Implementation score of 80.1% and a commitment to achieving a 95% target, CAAB is preparing for the ICAO Universal Safety Oversight Audit in June 2024.

“We’re dedicated to maintaining excellence in aviation safety and security, which are key determinants for global airlines choosing new destinations,” said Dr. Bao Rasebolai Mosinyi, CAAB’s Chief Executive Officer.

The air cargo sector is another focal point for CAAB’s transformation. With a 16.9% increase in cargo volumes during the 2023/24 financial year, the Authority is positioning Botswana as a regional transport hub. Plans include taking over operations of the cargo terminal at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport by 2025/26, a move anticipated to enhance efficiency and boost trade opportunities.
CAAB has made strides in airport certification, ensuring compliance with international safety standards. Maun International Airport was certified in February 2024, with Kasane and PG Matante International Airports set for certification by 2025. These certifications are vital for enhancing Botswana’s attractiveness to international airlines and supporting the nation’s tourism and trade sectors.

Central to CAAB’s vision is its workforce. Initiatives such as wellness programs, service recognition awards, and graduate internships highlight the Authority’s commitment to employee development and retention. CAAB is also enhancing IT systems to support remote working and streamline operations.
