House Democrat Files Third Impeachment Articles Against Donald Trump

U.S. Representative Shri Thanedar of Michigan has filed seven articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump on April 28, marking the third formal impeachment effort against the former and current president. The articles, introduced in the House of Representatives, allege a range of constitutional violations and abuses of power, reviving Democratic opposition to Trump’s policies as he continues to govern during his unprecedented second term in office.

Thanedar’s articles accuse Trump of abusing the powers of the presidency for political and personal gain, obstructing justice, misusing federal funds, violating constitutional protections of due process and equal protection, and engaging in behavior deemed incompatible with the presidency. Specific allegations include the unauthorized deportation of migrants, the misallocation of taxpayer money contrary to congressional intent, and efforts to unilaterally initiate a trade war without proper legislative consultation.

The Michigan Democrat, who has been a vocal critic of Trump’s immigration and foreign policy decisions, described the impeachment filing as a necessary defense of the Constitution and democratic norms. “President Trump’s continued disregard for the rule of law and constitutional boundaries demands accountability,” Thanedar said in a statement. “These articles serve as a record of that defiance and an appeal to Congress to fulfill its duty.”

This latest development comes just months after another impeachment attempt was announced by Representative Al Green of Texas. In February, Green declared his intent to file articles against Trump in response to a proposed policy on Gaza, which he described as “ethnic cleansing.” While Green’s articles have yet to move forward, they reflect growing frustration among progressive lawmakers over Trump’s second-term agenda.

Despite these moves, the path to impeachment remains politically unlikely. Republicans hold majorities in both the House and Senate, creating little appetite within the GOP to pursue proceedings against a president they continue to support. In the aftermath of the announcement, many analysts characterized Thanedar’s impeachment articles as largely symbolic, aimed at energizing the Democratic base ahead of the 2026 midterm elections rather than as a serious threat to Trump’s presidency.

Trump’s team has responded with confidence, suggesting that the impeachment efforts are distractions from legislative priorities. Aides to the president indicated that the administration is instead focusing on advancing key economic initiatives, including a planned extension of the 2017 tax cuts. The president, who made history as the first U.S. leader to be impeached twice during his first term, appears unfazed by the latest challenge, viewing it as a continuation of partisan attacks.
